Cheryl J. Chase
Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
About Cheryl

I am a graduate of California State University at San Bernardino with a Master's degree in Counseling Psychology, and I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist.  I have been in full-time private practice since 1993 in Claremont, California.  I have eight years previous experience with the Department of Behavioral Health in San Bernardino County.  This experience provided me with the opportunity to treat a wide range of mental and emotional disorders.  These included mood disorders, anxiety, thought disorders, childhood abuse and trauma, psychotic disorders and substance abuse.

I am a certified hypnotherapist, which is effective for smoking cessation, weight loss, and passing exams.  I am a fully trained E.M.D.R. (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) facilitator.  This is an intervention particularly useful for treatment of severe trauma and childhood abuse.  I am a member of the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists and the Jung Society.  I also teach psychology at Chaffey College in Rancho Cucamonga, California.

My approach to psychology is broad and eclectic, in that I pull from a variety of theories and treatment modalities.  My overall philosophy has an Existential, Jungian orientation.  I use whatever tools I believe would be most useful for a client depending on what issues are presented.  For example, to process and integrate one's past.  I usually use the Genogram, a psychological "family tree" where we explore one's family of origin and the various roles that have been played out through the family drama.  I also believe that Shadow work is  important, i.e. exploring the dark little known aspects of one's personality, and how shedding light in the Shadow can release creativity and renewed zest for living.  To resolve
conflict, "Parts work" may be utilized.  This is where a person comes to know the different  voices (or sub-selves) within and discovers which part would be most beneficial to listen to.

I often give homework and provide personality test so that a client can gain more insight and clarity into their identity and issues.  Overall, my method of providing psychotherapy is more structured and directive.  (I just don't sit there and listen) With all clients, I use holistic approach, taking into account the whole person and all facets of their lives including: work satisfaction, primary relationships and health issues.  If there is a single goal that applies to all clients it is this: To become whole and tap into the essence of who you really are.  When an individual learns to operate from this genuine self, they begin to make choices that are right for them.  Hence, their lives become more meaningful and satisfying.  Therapy can be the catalyst to facilitate this deeply rewarding process.
